Grateful Acres Logo
quote

Grateful Acres was established in Otsego, Michigan, for the purpose of providing lifetime care for animals with special needs. A secondary goal is to educate people about vegetarianism and a cruelty-free lifestyle. The sanctuary sits on thirteen acres in rural southwest Michigan, approximately 20 minutes from Kalamazoo. We care for over 100 permanent residents, and numerous other animals that are available for adoption to qualified homes. Our "lifers" include animals who are elderly or handicapped, others who have endured cruelty or neglect, and still others who were victims of factory farming. Grateful Acres is a care for life sanctuary, and is funded solely by tax-deductible donations made by people like you.

What It Costs
  • Feed for pigs, chickens, geese, and horses: $10.00 daily (more in winter)
  • Hay: $15.00 per day
  • Food for about 30 dogs and cats: approximately $25.00 per day
  • Farrier (hoof care) for 10 horses: $130.00 every eight weeks
  • Neutering one male kitten: $40.00
  • One "farm call" (on-site vet visit): starts at $40.00
  • Heating the dog kennels for winter: a minimum of $1,000.00
  • Mortgage payment for dog kennel property: $400.00 per month

This list is very basic and does not nearly describe all of the expenses we must meet each month. For example, sanctuary expenses for July 2003 were $1,039. However, September donations came to only $439! As you can see from the list above, we spend over $800 each month just on food and hay. So months like September are not just disappointing; they are debilitating. Please help in whatever way you can.
